AUGUST 29: Raoul Walsh - 8.55 pm

What Price Glory

Raoul Walsh (1926) 122 mins

Two US Marines (Victor McLaglen & Edmund Lowe) entrenched on the French front during World War 1 battle each other for the love of a woman (Dolores del Rio). Saucy pre-Code romantic scenes alternate with low comedy and brutal action. Terrifyingly realistic, the battle scenes feature tracking shots in muddy trenches that predict Kubrick's work in Paths of Glory three decades later. Based on a controversial Broadway play by Maxwell Anderson, Walsh's second to last silent film is a tour de force.
