OCTOBER 10: Val Lewton and his Legacy - 9:35pm

The Blood

(Pedro Costa) 1989 Portugal 95 mins

With intensely minimal films like In Vanda's Room & Colossal Youth, Pedro Costa is arguably one of the most original filmmakers working today. Three teenagers flee some nasty criminals, a dubious uncle and the law. In a desperate attempt to keep a secret, they decide to separate. Reminiscent of Nicholas Ray & RKO "B" movies with its nocturnal, dream-like b&w photography, the film charms equally as one of the great debuts of '80s European cinema. Imported 35mm print.

Screens after I Walked with a Zombie & Cat People (8.09pm).
