The Ister

(David Barison & Dan Ross) 2004 Australia 240 mins

Barison & Ross' ambitious & engaged essay film follows the winding route of the Danube to its mythical source, intercutting deeply philosophical discussions with Jean-Luc Nancy, Lacoue-Labarthe, Bernard Steigler & Hans-Jürgen Syberberg. Taking as its inspiration philosopher Martin Heidegger's 1942 lecture series & Hölderlin's poetry, the film weaves an extraordinary tapestry of ideas around questions & issues of technology, WWII, cultural identity, modern Europe & the shifting political climate. Adrian Martin called it, "the most intellectually rigorous & searching film ever made in this country".

To be introduced by the film-makers.
