Focus on Ryan Larkin

- Ryan Larkin

A protégé of Norman McLaren, Larkin was the wunderkind of the National Film Board of Canada's animation department from the mid-'60s until his drug-facilitated breakdown in the mid-'70s. Highlighting the kinetic, impressionistic & freewheeling nature of Larkin's work this program features Syrinx (1965) 3 mins, Cityscape (1966) 2 mins, the Oscar-nominated Walking (1968) 5 mins, & Street Musique (1972) 8 mins.

- Ryan Larkin, In Landreth's animation.

Concluding with Chris Landreth's Ryan (2004) 14 mins, a multi-award winning computer animation documenting Larkin's often-destitute life.

Exiled

(Johnnie To) 2006 Hong Kong 100 mins M

Four hoods descend on the household of a retired fellow criminal (Nick Cheung). Two (Anthony Wong, Lam Suet) are there to kill him, while the other two (Francis Ng, Roy Cheung) are there to protect him. Utilising the same cast as The Mission, Hong Kong action director Johnnie To's straightforward, but highly stylised & emotionally engaging gangland piece is his tribute to Sergio Leone. Also stars Simon Yam.

Election

(Johnnie To) 2005 Hong Kong 101 mins MA

A leadership dispute between Big D (Tony Leung) & Lok (Sam Yang) threatens to collapse the internal unity of the Wo Sing Society. To abandons the high-octane mythologising associated with the triad genre to stage a realistic & intriguing examination of politics in the Hong Kong underworld, punctuated albeit with bursts of abrupt & brutal violence. Shaw Brothers' regular David Chiang features as the Police Superintendent charged with diffusing all-out gang warfare.
