November 28: Third Cinema - 6.30pm

THE HOUR OF THE FURNACES

Fernando Solanos & Octavio Getino (1968) 88/121/47 mins

This collectively-made epic documentary is a scathing indictment of imperialist capitalism in Argentina. The first embodiment of a self-declared "Third Cinema" that would put the politics of production, distribution & presentation ahead of "mere" aesthetics, it is nonetheless an aesthetic masterpiece. The film combines newsreel footage, film extracts, interviews & a haunting two-minute close-up on Che Guevara's dead face to create an agitprop tool for education & direct revolutionary action. Part I, "Neo-Colonialism & Violence", is a radical history of Argentina. Part II, "An Act for Liberation", traces the 1945-1955 reign of Juan Peron and the activities of the Peronist movement after his fall from power. Part III, "Violence & Liberation", considers the role & meaning of violence in political struggle.
