OCTOBER 24: Youths in Italy - 7:00pm

I Vitteloni

(Federico Fellini) 1953 Italy 103 mins G

A seaside town is home and playground to five young men (including Alberto Sordi & Franco Fabrizi) who have nothing better to do than to dream, philosophise and live off their families who support their idleness and womanising. The tourists who come and go represent the modern world of post-war Italy, while the youths symbolise the restlessness and uncertainty of post-war Italy's emergence from a traditional and rural slumber. Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical, third film put him in the spotlight, earning him a nomination by the Academy for Best Original Screenplay.

In the Name of the Father

(Marco Bellocchio) 1972 Italy 107 mins

An aloof non-conformist joins with a rebellious student to turn the school play into a subversive weapon. Replete with meaningless, increasingly exaggerated religious rituals, & examining the relationship between those with power & authority & the students under their control, this fascinating treatise on the repressive nature of educational institutions is a metaphor for a moribund social system. Instilled with a relentless rage, this is amongst the best and most outrageous of Bellocchio's early work.
