OCTOBER 31: Ingmar Bergman - 8:30pm

Scenes from a Marriage

(Ingmar Bergman) 1973 Sweden 168 mins M

Stunning dissection of a disintegrating relationship between wife (a beautifully nuanced performance by Liv Ullmann) & husband (Erland Josephson). A superficially brittle but enduring bourgeois marriage is captured in claustrophobic & lacerating close-up detail by Sven Nykvist's cinematography. Originally a 6-part TV series, this refashioned feature is Bergman's greatest '70s film. Characters & situations were strikingly revisited in Bergman's Saraband & reworked in Ullmann's Faithless.

Screens after Now, about all these Women ( 7.00pm).
