March 19 - 7:00pm
Alexander Sokurov (2002) 99 mins G
At once a dizzying cinematic feat, revisionist film history & sumptuous historical document, Sokurov’s opus is a journey through the cultural & political riches of Russian history from the 17th to the pre-Revolutionary 20th centuries. Enclosed inside the walls of the magnificent Hermitage in St. Petersburg, some 2000 actors perform a kind of hypnotic ballet for their director who miraculously uses a single travelling shot to produce an extraordinary study of the Enlightenment period & the nature of cinema itself.
* Followed by The End of St. Petersburg at 8.50 pm, and The Tailor From Torzhok at 10.15pm.
